So I'm a Hillary delegate!

Let me be honest. Until yesterday, I didn't really have a good understanding of the whole "Texas Two Step" caucus thing. I know how to vote, but I've never stayed for the caucus. But I went last night, and it was the coolest thing. I live a Houston suburb. I guess because the state is Republican for the most part, I forget that there are Democrats around even in my part of town. It was really neat to see all of them come together. Here's what happened: I walked into the building at about 7:10. There were several precincts voting there, so I followed the signs to my precinct caucus. There was a line to sign the rolls, and I got signed in around 7:20. I had to put down my name, my voter ID number, and my contact information for verification, along with my candidate's name. When everyone was signed in, the precinct chair and a volunteer from each candidate totaled up all the signatures.

We had 93 people come to the caucus from my precinct, and everyone watched them count to check their math. That really isn't that many people, considering, and so you knew the people that showed up really cared. And they were all from my neighborhood or area! That's a pretty intimate little group. I didn't get the sense that there were Republicans there voting against Hillary. I remember thinking that this must be what it feels like in New Hampshire. We were all chatting while they were verifying the signatures. We talked about whether it was a hard decision between HC and BO, their chances against McCain, Tina Fey, Will.I.Am, the supposed brown/black divide, and a bunch of stuff. People were checking blackberries to give Ohio updates.

It ended up being 48 for Obama, 45 for Clinton. We got 10 delegates, and because it was so even, each candidate got 5. They asked the room to divide, and said that those who didn't want to be delegates could leave. And at the end, there were about 30 people still there. We needed 5 delegates and 5 alternates for each candidate, and so it wasn't too hard to do. It was very easy to get swept into the excitement of the room. I'm a Hillary delegate!
